AI Engineer | San Francisco | AI Infrastructure / Developer Tools | $200K–$250K + Equity

Our client is building one of the most widely adopted AI infrastructure platforms in the market, trusted by thousands of engineering teams worldwide. Their technology enables businesses to connect, manage, route, and scale AI applications across a rapidly growing ecosystem of LLM providers.

They’re now looking for an AI Engineer to help build the infrastructure layer powering the next generation of AI applications. This is not an ML research role. Instead, you’ll be designing the systems that sit between developers and AI models, creating seamless integrations across OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Mistral, Bedrock, and many more.

You’ll work directly alongside the founders, owning critical pieces of the platform that developers rely on every day. If you’re passionate about Python, developer tooling, AI infrastructure, and shipping products at startup speed, this could be an exceptional opportunity.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain the interoperability layer that standardizes requests across multiple LLM providers
• Design and develop Python services using FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and Redis
• Create API transformations that convert OpenAI and Anthropic specifications into provider-specific formats
• Develop gateway-level features including session management, routing, batching, skills, and model orchestration
• Contribute to agent infrastructure, MCP integrations, authentication flows, and emerging AI workflows
• Improve developer experience for millions of users leveraging a Python SDK
• Work closely with customers to understand real-world challenges and ship meaningful solutions quickly
• Collaborate directly with the founders on product and architecture decisions

Skills & Experience

• 1-3 years of backend or full-stack engineering experience building production systems
• Strong Python development experience
• Experience with FastAPI, REST API design, and backend architecture
• Hands-on experience working with OpenAI, Anthropic, Claude, GPT, Gemini, or other LLM APIs
• Understanding of AI application development, AI agents, RAG systems, or AI developer tooling
• Experience working with PostgreSQL and Redis
• Strong system design and problem-solving abilities
• Passion for open-source software and developer communities
• Excellent communication skills and a willingness to engage directly with users
• Comfortable thriving in a fast-paced startup environment with high ownership

Nice to Have

• Contributions to open-source projects
• Experience building developer platforms or API infrastructure
• Knowledge of MCP (Model Context Protocol)
• Experience with agent frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex
• Background in AI infrastructure, platform engineering, or developer tooling companies
